Northolt splits in two

The A40 Western Avenue divides Northolt more sharply than most people realise, and for our purposes it divides it into two completely different jobs.

North of the A40 is mostly interwar private housing — 1920s and 1930s semis, much like Ruislip or Eastcote. Driveways are common. These are usually straightforward installs.

South of the A40 is largely post-war and council-built. The borough put up around 3,500 homes here in the two decades after the Central line arrived in 1948, including the Racecourse Estate, built between 1951 and 1955 on the old pony racecourse. A lot of it is flats, maisonettes and terraces.

Which side you are on tells us most of what we need to know before we turn up.

The driveway question, answered honestly

In the Northolt West area, the 2021 census found that around four homes in ten are purpose-built flats, and roughly three households in ten have no car at all. Detached houses are about three per cent of the stock.

That matters because a home charger needs somewhere off the public road to park. If you have a driveway, hardstanding, a garage or a private parking space, we can almost certainly fit you a charger.

If you park on the street, the honest answer is that you cannot have one at the moment. Ealing Council does not permit charging across the pavement — not a cable over it, not a covered channel, not a gully sunk into it. This is not us being cautious. Ealing looked at gullies properly, took it to Cabinet in November 2025, and decided not to run a trial, citing safety, unclear liability and long-term cost to the highway.

Anyone who tells you they can sort you a gully in Northolt is either not from round here or is hoping nobody checks.

What you can do instead in Northolt

This is the useful bit, and most installers will not mention it because there is nothing in it for them.

Ealing already has on-street charging run by TotalEnergies, Shell Recharge (the lamp post ones) and Believ. And the council lets residents suggest a location for a new charge point through a form on its website. It costs nothing to ask.

They cannot do every location — some streets will not take it electrically, some are too narrow — but the requests are what drives where the next ones go. Ealing is aiming for 2,500 charge points by 2030, with over a thousand more funded from 2027, so there is a real pipeline to get your road into.

Ask. Then ask your neighbours to ask.

If you do have off-street parking

Then it is a normal install and we will get it done, usually in a day.

The one thing worth flagging in the post-war Northolt stock is the fuse board. A lot of these houses have had one board change since they were built and it is not always recent enough to take another circuit. We would rather see a photo of it now than discover it on the day with your car sat on the drive.

If you are in a flat or maisonette with an allocated space, we will also need the freeholder or managing agent to agree in writing before we can start. Worth beginning that conversation early — it is usually the slowest part.

Load management, in plain terms

Your house has one main fuse. Run the oven, the shower and a car charger together and something has to give. Load management is a sensor that watches what the house is drawing and quietly turns the car charging down when it needs to, then puts it back up.

On the smaller supplies common in this part of Northolt, it is usually worth having.

What it costs in Northolt

A standard 7kW install starts at £850. If the consumer unit needs replacing first the total is higher, and we tell you by how much from the photos — before you commit to anything. A long or awkward cable run costs a bit more, and that is in the quote before we start, not added afterwards.

You get a fixed price, from photographs, before anybody books time off work.

What about the government grant?

If you own or rent a flat with private off-street parking, you can claim up to £500. If you are a landlord, up to £500 per socket. Given how much of Northolt is flats and rented, this is worth checking properly rather than assuming it does not apply to you.

If you own a house with a driveway, there is no grant — those schemes closed to standard households some years ago.

And if you have no off-street parking at all, read charging without a driveway before you spend anything.
